The Golf Outing
Meadows Farms Championship Golf Course was the dream of Bill “Farmer” Meadows – founder of Meadows Farms Nurseries – who began playing golf in 1990. As he played more golf, he began to visualize a new kind of golf course. His pure bred Santa Gertrudis Cattle Farm located in Locust Grove, about 20 minutes from most of the lake, was an ideal site with its beautiful gently rolling countryside.
The course philosophy of providing players with a “no-frills” championship course and keeping fees at the lowest of any course in the area, brings an affordable and fun golf experience with our Lake Anna residents and visitors.
The 180-acre, 27-hole course was designed by Bill Ward, Jr. Ward made each hole with a distinct character to offer a wide range of challenges and experiences. Maximum effort has been put into individualizing each hole so that the golfer will feel as if he/she has played 27 different courses rather than playing the same hole 27 times. Each hole has a story to tell.
Ward has brought some new ideas to Virginia golf, taking elements from major courses in Florida and California. There are elevated tees, bounce bunkers, rock and railroad tie walls in and around the greens, bunkers waiting to catch an errant shot, an island green, a stunning waterfall Par 3, and seven water crossings.
The signature hole is a par 6, and when played from the championship tee is 841 yards. This is recognized by the Guinness’ Book of World Records as “The Longest Golf Hole in the United States.” The design gives every level of golfer an option on how to play the hole – while challenging for the golf pro and low-handicapper, it offers a fair test for the high-handicapper. You will always remember you played “The Longest!”
Bill Meadows’ talent for unique landscaping is evident throughout the course. Seasonal colorful flora provide aesthetic appeal and charm. Spring colors abound from February throughout the year into autumn hues of brown, red and gold. You’ll enjoy playing your round as the course weaves its way though a pre-civil war homestead and cemetery and on the very ground where civil war battles were fought. Fields of grazing champion purebred Santa Gertrudis Cattle adds another dimension you won’t ever forget! To book your tee time call 540.854.9890.
