LKAers are invited to join pilot and flight instructor Lakey Harkrader of Vortex Flight School & Air Tours this season. Harkrader operates the business out of Louisa County Airport using a fleet of three Cessna airplanes, himself and another instructor.
Air tours over Lake Anna have been a popular option for Harkrader, who grew up in Louisa County and has been flying for many years.
The local pilot graduated from Randolph Macon College with a degree in Economics and Business. After school he worked in management for Faulconer Construction Company and then moved on to follow his dream of guiding in Alaska and flying.
Since leaving Faulconer, he has worked in different parts of remote Alaska as a big game hunting guide and commercial fisherman. Lakey has spent many hours in small bush planes and float planes, getting to know some of the best pilots the country has to offer, and be a part of some of the most rugged and real flying there is. This is where he found his passion for aviation.
“As soon as I started flying, it took over my life. I feel very blessed to have found something to make a career out of, that will never seem like work. It makes it even better that I get to share that passion with others, as a flight instructor.”
Alex Gonyea is the second instructor at Vortex. He’s a graduate from the Florida Institute of Technology and has an Aeronautical Science degree with a minor in Flight Technology. He has aviation experience in multiple different aircraft and locations spanning from Florida, Texas, to now Virginia. Through his passion for flying, Alex grew patience, dedication, and commitment to make sure he has a positive impact on everybody he interacts with.
