Lake Anna has a new group you may want to join populated with members that pledge to serve others.
Lake Anna Life & Times caught up with Lake Anna Rotary Club President Doug Barmoy to find out more about Lake Anna’s newest club.
“If you want to help others and the community, we’ll take you. Our motto is ‘service above self,’” Barmoy told Life & Times.
Other executive board members include president elect Marie Snyder, Treasurer Carrie Withers, Secretary Kelly Boyle and board members Frank Ramey, Kristin Barmoy and Devon Dempsey.
The freshly chartered Lake Anna Rotary already has 60 members with an open membership, meeting the second and last Tuesday of each month from 5-6:15 at Sunset Cove clubhouse.
“We started Lake Anna Rotary because it was a way to bring like-minded people that wanted to help others in one spot. That’s what Rotary is known for,” Barmoy explained.
He said club members have reached out to many civic and service groups, the local school boards and surounding elected representatives to see where they can put their efforts and resources to help out.
Lake Anna Rotary is about 50/50 male and female members and 25% are married couples. Most of the members are also retirees.
Barmoy has a Rotary history. He was a member of the Rotary Club of Pennsylvania and president for a year as well as a board member.
When asked why he helped start the new club at Lake Anna Barmoy said, “It makes me feel good. I feel really good knowing I am a Rotarian and can help other people. The friendships and relationships I’ve had with my fellow Rotarians has been incredible – not unlike a big family.”
There are 160 Rotary Clubs in Virginia with 60 of those in northern and central Virginia.
