A licensed aquatic herbicide applicator has been contracted by the Lake Anna Advisory Committee (LAAC) to treat approximately 19 acres of the upper portion of Plentiful Creek with the chemical Diquat to manage the hydrilla that currently exists in that area. An image showing the treatment area (outlined in red on the map) is provided here.

The treatment will take place on Monday, August 18th during the period 9 am to noon. The chemical will be sprayed on the surface of the water. The chemical is environmentally safe and is safe for humans and animals immediately after treatment. The chemical will have no impact on the fish and other wildlife in the area. Diquat has been used successfully for more than 20 years and has been approved by the Department of Wildlife Services (DWR), the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (VDACS), and Dominion Energy.

People can continue to enjoy that area of the lake immediately after the spraying is completed.

This project is part of LAAC’s 2025 Hydrilla Management Program that included a permitted stocking of grass carp into the upper North Anna River branch of the lake as well as extensive surveys of the lake’s hydrilla growth. These surveys are ongoing.

Only a licensed applicator is able to treat any aquatic weed in Lake Anna and only after receiving permission from Dominion Energy. DWR reviews all applications to stock grass carp.

Dominion does have an option for Homeowners Associations and individuals to apply for aquatic herbicide treatment by a licensed applicator. More information on that can be found on Dominion’s website.
